Which sales qualification framework by seat: SPICED, MEDDPICC, or expand and renew
One framework across every seat is a known enablement anti-pattern. SPICED (Winning by Design, Jacco van der Kooij) fits SDR / BDR discovery and SQL handoff. MEDDPICC extends MEDDIC (Jack Napoli and Dick Dunkel, PTC, 1990s) with Paper Process and Competition for enterprise AEs. CSM inherits a closed-won pack and defends expand, renew, or hold without inventing a third acronym.

Where each framework comes from
SPICED
Winning by Design · Jacco van der Kooij · 2010s
Buyer-conversational discovery: Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical Event, Decision.
Breaks when forced onto AE Paper Process and Competition cycles.
MEDDPICC
MEDDIC (Napoli / Dunkel, PTC, 1990s) plus Paper Process and Competition
Enterprise deal inspection across eight failure modes under buying-committee pressure.
Breaks when SDRs fill Economic Buyer and Paper Process before AE owns the room.
Expand and renew
Post-sale discipline · no single dominant acronym · WBD recurring-impact lineage
Inherited-pack gap audit, then defensible expand, renew, or hold.
Breaks when CSM enablement collapses into net-new AE discovery scripts.
What breaks when the wrong framework owns the seat
- SDR / BDR pods forced into MEDDPICC produce checkbox theatre: Economic Buyer and Paper Process fields that AEs discard at intake.
- AEs coached only on SPICED miss Paper Process and Competition, the two places enterprise deals most often die after discovery.
- CSMs scored on net-new MEDDPICC discovery ignore inherited gaps, adoption evidence, and whitespace that actually decide renewals.
- Managers cannot compare cohorts when every seat invents its own "good enough" qualification language.
What a seat-correct mapping produces
- SPICED pack with Situation through Decision cited for SQL handoff readiness (ready / partial / not ready).
- MEDDPICC heatmap plus ICCE after fellowship for live board readiness under multi-threaded pressure.
- Expand / renew / hold call on inherited evidence with named documentation gaps for CSM.
- Hiring freezes the same gates: HIRESDR (SPICED), HIREAE (MEDDPICC), HIRECS (expand / renew).
- Managers pick the framework once per room and per hiring contract, then review comparable evidence in RCC.
Seat matrix: framework, win, artifact, handoff, wrong-fit failure
| Seat | Framework | Win condition | Primary artifact | Handoff owner | Wrong-fit failure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SDR / BDR | SPICED | SQL handoff readiness (ready / partial / not ready) | Cited SPICED pack | AE intake | MEDDPICC checkbox theatre AEs reject |
| Account Executive | MEDDPICC | Live board readiness after fellowship | MEDDPICC heatmap + ICCE | CSM / closed-won pack | SPICED-only coaching misses Paper Process and Competition |
| Customer Success / CSM | Expand and renew | Defensible expand, renew, or hold | Gap audit + expand_renew call | CS leader / renewals desk | MEDDPICC discovery on an inherited pack |
| Hiring (work sample) | Seat-matched freeze | Comparable human hire / no-hire on locked gates | HIRESDR / HIREAE / HIRECS bands | Recruiting manager in RCC | One AE script for every candidate seat |
Wrong-fit scenarios managers recognize
SDR pod forced into MEDDPICC
An SDR pod adopts MEDDPICC because the CRO likes the acronym. Six weeks in, every opportunity shows Economic Buyer "identified" and Paper Process "in progress" with no cited evidence. AEs re-qualify from zero. Ramp time rises; forecast trust falls. SPICED would have forced Situation through Decision with a ready / partial / not-ready verdict the AE can audit.
AE coached only on SPICED
An AE team keeps SPICED because discovery felt natural. Mid-cycle, legal and procurement stall with no Paper Process owner, and a silent incumbent reappears as Competition. The deal dies after a "qualified" discovery. MEDDPICC exists because enterprise cycles die on those two letters after discovery already looked fine.
CSM scored on net-new MEDDPICC
A CS org runs MEDDPICC roleplay for renewals. Reps invent Metrics and Champion stories instead of auditing missing EB intro, unsigned champion proof, and thin adoption. Whitespace stays ownerless. Expand / renew desks grade gap-audit accuracy and decision defensibility on the inherited pack, not discovery theatre.
Pick the framework for a new hire in 60 seconds
- Name the seat the person will own. SDR / BDR, AE, CSM, or hiring work sample for one of those seats.
- Name the terminus a manager will defend. SQL handoff readiness, live MEDDPICC board readiness, or expand / renew / hold.
- Reject frameworks the seat cannot own. No Economic Buyer or Paper Process ownership for SDR. No net-new discovery for CSM.
- Freeze the same gates for hiring if recruiting. HIRESDR, HIREAE, or HIRECS must match the seat the candidate would join.
- Create the Deal IQ room or hiring contract once. One framework per room. Review evidence in RCC against that contract.
What about BANT, CHAMP, ValueSelling, and Command of the Message?
- BANT
- Budget / Authority / Need / Timing is too thin for modern SaaS multi-threading and post-sale ownership.
- CHAMP
- Useful discovery mnemonic; does not carry Paper Process, Competition, or expand / renew terminus.
- ValueSelling
- Strong value conversation craft; not a full enterprise qualification and handoff operating system.
- Command of the Message
- Positioning and narrative discipline; complements qualification, does not replace seat-correct frameworks.
Practice under pressure, not certification theatre
Deal IQ maps one qualification framework per seat because forcing a single framework across seats produces empty packs and tribal coaching. SPICED rooms, MEDDPICC rooms, and expand / renew desks share the NovaTech / SwiftLane world with different termini. See the Deal IQ rulebook #framework-choice section and the SDR, AE, and CSM solution seats for the live contracts.
Attributions
SPICED originates from Winning by Design (Jacco van der Kooij). MEDDIC was created by Jack Napoli and Dick Dunkel at PTC in the 1990s. MEDDPICC adds Paper Process and Competition. Deal IQ practices these frameworks under pressure with manager-reviewable evidence. We do not certify SPICED or MEDDPICC.
What Deal IQ does not claim
Deal IQ does not certify SPICED or MEDDPICC. We provide practice under pressure with manager-reviewable evidence, frozen hiring contracts, and seat-correct termini. Framework trademarks and methodologies belong to their respective owners.

Explore Deal IQFrequently asked questions
Can SDRs use MEDDPICC?
They can be taught the letters, but the seat does not own Economic Buyer politics, Paper Process, or Competition displacement. Forcing MEDDPICC on SDR / BDR usually produces empty fields AEs rework. SPICED matches opener and discovery ownership through SQL handoff.
Is MEDDIC the same as MEDDPICC?
No. MEDDIC is the PTC-origin framework. MEDDPICC adds Paper Process and Competition because enterprise deals often die in procurement and against incumbents after discovery looked qualified.
What framework should CSMs use?
There is no single dominant CSM acronym the way MEDDPICC dominates AE. Deal IQ names the discipline expand / renew: gap audit on an inherited pack, then a defensible expand, renew, or hold call.
Is BANT still valid?
BANT is too thin for modern SaaS multi-threading and post-sale ownership. It can start a conversation; it is not a seat operating system for SDR handoff, AE enterprise cycles, or CSM renewals.
Does Deal IQ certify SPICED or MEDDPICC?
No. Deal IQ is practice infrastructure with manager-reviewable evidence. Certification vendors teach theory; we train decisions under pressure.
Which framework does the German market prefer?
DACH enterprise AE motions commonly run MEDDIC or MEDDPICC. Modern SaaS top-of-funnel teams often use SPICED or Winning by Design language for SDR / BDR. CSM remains expand / renew and customer-health discipline rather than a third acronym.
How does this fit ramp for a new AE?
Map the AE seat to MEDDPICC, run fellowship through Qualification before live buyer turns, then score live board readiness with heatmap and ICCE. Do not ramp AEs on SPICED-only packs if Paper Process and Competition decide the forecast.
How should hiring use these frameworks?
Freeze the seat-matched gates: HIRESDR for SPICED, HIREAE for MEDDPICC, HIRECS for expand / renew. One AE script for every candidate seat is the wrong-fit failure hiring leaders should avoid.
